What is loneliness?

First, we have to define what loneliness is and what we mean when we talk about it. Loneliness refers to the feeling of being alone or isolated, although not necessarily physically. Loneliness can be a transient feeling, which is experienced temporarily and disappears when one reconnects with others. However, when loneliness becomes chronic, it can have negative effects on mental and physical health.

How does loneliness begin?

Loneliness can start for different reasons, such as the loss of a loved one, a romantic breakup, the lack of friends or significant relationships, social isolation, retirement, moving to a new city, etc. Sometimes, loneliness can be voluntary, as in the case of people who prefer to spend time alone. All these events can create loneliness, but there are many other situations as well that can create this. When loneliness begins, it produces various emotions in your body, thus creating effects on your daily life.

What emotions does loneliness produce?

Loneliness can generate a wide range of emotions, including sadness, anxiety, depression, frustration, anger, fear, insecurity, low self-esteem, among others. These emotions can have a negative impact on a person’s mental and physical health.

When we are alone, we often experience a sense of emotional and social disconnection that can generate a feeling of emptiness and lack of purpose in our lives. It can also lead to a sense of abandonment and isolation, which in turn can increase the feeling of sadness and hopelessness. In addition, loneliness often leads to rumination and negative thoughts about oneself and others, which can affect our self-esteem and self-criticism. Although loneliness is a natural and common emotion, it is important to recognize it and seek ways to manage it to avoid it becoming a chronic problem.
